Kevin asked: I keep hearing about the increase in people stealing fromg as stations by pumping their gas and then driving off without paying. This puzzles me, because everywhere I have ever driven in the US, all of the stations require prepayment. The pump will not work unless you either go into the station and give the clerk your cash or charge card and he activates the pump, or you use a “pay at the pump” method with your charge card. Is this a matter of some states requireing prepayment and others not? Or is it a decision of station operators? I have driven in various states in the west coast and Northeast, and have yet to encounter a pump that will work without paying first. If this is not a matter of local laws prohibiting them from doing so, I don’t know why any station owner would have pumps set up to pump “for free.”
