anyone know about prepay meters?
mumto1 asked:
i have been in my property for 3 years when we moved in we had a new pre payment metre fitted and our supplier was british gas as we have a card for them anyway an adviser came round today and says we are not with them an national grid says we have no supplier we have been putting nearly 25 pound a week on the meter and no one knows who its going to we don’t get free gas because when the money goes on the meter the gas cuts off until we top up again so surely someone must be supplying us ? anyway does anyone know what happens in this situation. oh also we have never had a bill from any gas supplier since we have been here never thought anything of it because its a pre pay meter until today.
can they still charge me even though i have paid nearly 3,000 pound over the last 3 years

If nobody knows who your supplier is, then sign up with someone. The gas is supplied from a central supplier who then bills each supplier in turn – the supplier who you pay may not supply the gas as such, but just pays the supplier the total used by all its customers – this is decided by the meter (which operates independently of a local supplier). If you say you want to get signed up with some one, then make sure you agree the situation with them – that they are not to backdate any charges.

One way to find out what is going on is to ring the emergency number for a suspected gas leak. It is in all ‘phone books.
See who turns up.
Then ask for a statement of accounts.
Worth a try !
