My bank merged & altered my db card to overdrafts without my written permission-any recourse to fees charged?

Ron D asked:

I use my debit card like money in my pocket – if I need something & can afford it – I buy it. No money in account then i do without. This has worked well for me until my bank merged with another bank. They sent me a letter telling me how great the overdraft coverage was. I did not question the letter as i was happy with my current setup. Due to a math error on my part I thought I had $300.00 more in my account. I have bought several small items over a 15 day period and find that they are charging me $30.00 a pop on each transaction. So a $100.00 worth of groceries and gas, etc is going to cost me $300.00 plus in fees. Is there any recourse prior to me talking to the bank manager? Are banks free to change up your account without telling you what your loosing (I see it a a quick way for the new bank to make a ton of money even it they chopped out half of the fees)? Thanks for any constructive help.

I desperately need help with my finances! How do I make my money stretch?

Kari D asked:

Okay, I really need help with my finances. If anyone knows where I can get FREE help, please let me know. Let me break it down.

I have a family of six-myself, my husband, his brother, and 3 kids ages 12, 8, and 2. I am the only one working. I make net $35360 per year. My husband was staying home with our youngest child because based on what he could make working it was actually more cost efficient than daycare for the 3 children. His brother hit hard times and came to live with us, he agreed to baby-sit. My husband went back to work a little while ago, but had a serious injury (cut off his finger with a saw) and we are still waiting for compensation and have no income from him.
Rent 800
Electric and gas 150 (for now)
Cable Internet and phone 150
Car Payment and Insurance 300
Food 800 for month
Gas 240
401k 40
Flex source card 140
Life insurance 50

As you can see the money is already gone and I haven’t included all the other random expenses. What do I do?
Sorry, I meant gross, not net…

Do debt consolidation companies really help that much?

patti_jim_reynolds asked:

My husband and I are WAY in debt and I have been trying to talk him into doing debt consolidation cause at the rate we are going, we won’t be able to buy a house until our kids are all out of the house!! The thing is, he doesn’t believe they actually help all that much and that we would be better off paying it off ourselves. Is it true that they can work with credit card companies to reduce or even remove APR from the debt amount and can give you an estimate of when you can be debt free? We have four credit cards that equal about $25,000 and we’ve got to the point where we are making payments just so we can get food and gas. Any debt consolidation advice is greatly appreciated!
