Why do websites have to lie all the time? Why can’t they mean what they say when they say it?

I get those paying surveys that advertise themselves as “free”, but when I actually participate in one, I end up having to fully sign-up or pay for one of their offers to get the money for taking the survey (pandaresearch.com for example). Or when I am told that I have a “free” $100-$500 gift card waiting for me, I can’t get it unless I fully sign up or pay for one or 2 of their offers. Same thing with the “free” gas cards. If they’re telling me that It’s free, it should be just that, “FREE”, with no catches or what so ever.
