They’re not illegal, but they are a scam.
Basically they make you sign up to buy a good or service from one of their sponsors, and get other people to do the same. Those sponsors pay the company a portion of the money they get from you, and that is how you get the ‘free’ stuff.

These “sponsor” offers are legal, but many times, they are too good to be true.
Usually, depending on what you are trying to get for free, you need to sign up, and complete, trial runs/memberships/products for various companies. The trial memberships are different in length, and you may need to pay for them.
A lot of times, the offer depends on you completing so many different memberships, within a set time frame, that, if you don’t complete them, you can run out of time and have to start all over again.
Your best bet? Save a little money every day and buy what you want. Can’t do that, try Rent a Center.
